About Us

Mei means beautiful in Mandarin and sets the tone for this uncommon Asian dining experience located in the heart of Chicago’s South Loop. Using only the freshest and finest ingredients such as Berkshire Pork, Mei’s features traditional Taiwanese, Mandarin, and Szechuan delicacies. All of the ingredients are carefully chosen and hand selected at the Chinese market and all pork dishes feature Berkshire Pork known for its mild, tender and exquisite taste. This legacy menu was curated to provide a balance of tastes, textures, fragrances and colors.

The inspiration came to owner, Su-Mei Yen, feeling that throughout her many travels in the US, there was a void in the market for discovering truly authentic homemade Asian cuisine that one could only experience if they traveled to Asia. Out of this need, the concept of Mei’s was born. Su-Mei, through her extensive travel throughout many regions in Asia, brought back the best of the best delicacies. Su-Mei, growing up in the tea mountain regions of Taiwan, also incorporated the many heritage traditions of preparation that she observed and learned from her grandmother, Leia, as well as the legendary Madame Jiang, “first lady” of the Republic of China.

In Taiwan, a meal is a social event meant to be experienced by others. At Mei’s, dishes are often shared and served family style. All this has translated into a dining experience which is designed to awaken all facets of the senses.

Taiwan, in the last few years, is now known as a “foodie” country, featuring many Michelin chefs who have been influenced to curate the best from Japan, China and Taiwan.

All of this inspiration has all been designed to deliver an exceptional, authentic dining experience.
